Spectacularly sited cliff top fort with the best views of The Needles Rocks
Visit a Victorian coastal defence and secret rocket testing site perched high above the Needles Rocks. Exhibitions and displays explain the history of The Old Battery, part of a chain of defences built in the early 1860s to protect the naval dockyards at Portsmouth on the orders of Prime Minister Lord Palmerston. The intriguing history brought to life comic-book style with memorabilia from World War II. An underground tunnel gives access to with a bird's eye view of The Needles. The tearoom, in old look-out tower, has some of the most dramatic views in Britain. Nearby there are also miles of wonderful cliff top walks stretching from the Needles Headland to Freshwater Bay.
