Celebrating 350 Years of the Moving and Projected Image

CURRENTLY CLOSED FOR BUILDING WORK, REOPENING IN MAY 2023

Kent Museum of the Moving Image (Kent MOMI), opened 2018, explores the deep history of the moving image—from the days of candle-lit magic lantern performances and hand-painted slides, through Victorian visual experimentation, to the advent and the heyday of the cinema.   Current exhibitions are: "Passport to Ealing: The Films and their Posters, 1938-1958" (presenting the unique artworks and great films commissioned and created by this most British of studios); "35,000 Years to Catch a Shadow" (a history of the "great arts of light and shadow", concluding with the cinema); "The Royal Polytechnic and Multi-Media Victorian London" (the mother of all cinemas, founded 1838); and "Vinten Cameras: A Celebration".  Tickets are valid for a calendar year.  The museum has a small conservatory cafe and a large and sunny garden, (in which to enjoy its tea, coffee, drinks, snacks and ice creams), together with a shop featuring unique merchandise, most of it based on items in the museum's collection.  See our web page for frequent special events, like Children's Workshops, free archival screenings, film nights, and specialist hands-on Film Handling Workshops.  Or contact the curators, Prof. Joss Marsh and David Francis OBE (co-founder of the original London MOMI), info@kentmomi.org, to request a curated tour, or a bespoke workshop, e.g. on Victorian 3D or Magic Lantern Showmanship.  The museum's ground-floor Margaret Amaral Gallery and its large paved garden are open for rental, outside normal opening hours, for parties and special events; B & B is available at the museum flat.
