Discover how Churchill's 'Few' kept the UK safe from invasion in 1940 to preserve this island as the springboard for the D-Day invasion in 1944.

The Battle of Britain Memorial at Capel-le-Ferne, on Kent's famous White Cliffs, brings together a place of calm reflection with a modern, interactive visitor centre that has something of offer visitors of all ages. Now certified as Covid-safe, the site is open from Friday through to Monday each week, from 10am to 5pm. visitors are asked to wear a face covering in The Wing except when eating or drinking in the Cockpit Cafe.
The site features the National Memorial to the Few, a stone carving of an airman gazing out to sea, perhaps reflecting on friends yet to return or contemplating his own next sortie. At the rear of the site is the Christopher Foxley-Norris Memorial Wall, which lists the names of all those who fought the Battle of Britain in 1940.
Nearby stand full-sized replicas of a Spitfire and Hurricane, the fighters most associated with this historic victory over the Luftwaffe, while there are also busts of Air Chief Marshal Sir Keith Park and Lord Dowding, who each played a significant role in the conflict.
The modern Wing visitor centre, built in the shape of a Spitfire wing, houses the exciting, hands-on, Scramble Experience, an audio-visual treat that combines interactive activities with a wealth of information on the fewer-than 3,000 men who fought the Battle. While children will find much to keep them amused, the depth of information on offer is also enough to satisfy the most ardent enthusiast or researcher.
A well-stocked shop with unique, signed items and a first floor cafe with views over the Channel to France add to the appeal of this remarkable memorial to remarkable men.
