Dover’s Grade I listed town hall, founded in 1203 to provide hospitality for pilgrims and the care of wounded and destitute soldiers and once a meeting place for monarchs.
The Grade I Listed Maison Dieu (Dover Town Hall) has undergone a £10.5m restoration thanks to a £4.27m grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
The Maison Dieu reopened in Spring ’25 having undergone a £10.5m restoration. Redundant spaces have been brought to life for commercial use, the Mayor’s Parlour is now a beautiful Landmark Trust holiday let and a packed events programme is planned to celebrate its medieval hospital history. Open to the public daily for the first time in its 800-year history, this magnificent building is now accessible to wheelchair users with step-free access from street level and a lift to the halls where interactive screens and informative displays reveal the colourful history. See the glorious Gothic interiors created by architect William Burges, and view beautifully restored paintings, armoury and stained-glass windows (many designed by Edward Poynter in the late 1800s and depicting scenes from Dover's rich history).
