Plymouth owes its existence to the ocean. From Sir Francis Drake setting off to circumnavigate the world, to the sailing of the Mayflower in 1620 or the city’s significant naval heritage, the waterfront location plays centre stage. 

Discover Plymouth’s maritime history at the Mayflower Step and Mayflower Museum. Royal William Yard, Plymouth Hoe and the Royal Citadel, a dramatic 17th century fortress, or hop on a boat trip around Plymouth Sound to experience Britain’s Ocean City from the water. Plymouth is also home to the National Marine Aquarium, the UK’s largest with over 4,000 sea creatures, great and small.  

Wander the cobbled streets of the Barbican and Sutton Harbour with their eclectic mix of boutiques, art galleries and cafes, or head to the city centre for the best shopping in the South West with top brand names at Drake Circus shopping centre. 

Make sure to take a visit to Plymouth’s incredible museum, The Box, to find out all about the city’s fascinating history. There’s a changing programme of events and exhibitions throughout the year and it’s free to enter.
