The award-winning Tate St Ives, perched on the edge of the spectacular Porthmeor Beach, is an art gallery that celebrates the dynamic spirit of the artists who lived and worked in the town throughout the twentieth century. The beautiful building showcases modern art in St Ives and its relationship with the wider world, offering a chronological overview of 20th century art from the perspective of St Ives, including British and international artists from Ben Nicholson, Peter Lanyon and Barbara Hepworth to Piet Mondrian, Naum Gabo and Paule Vezelay. Alongside the display are temporary exhibitions, exploring the best of British and international modern and contemporary art. These opportunities highlight the work of an individual artist or group of artists, showing new developments in contemporary art, intertwined with a broader context to highlight West Cornwall’s rich and diverse history and the wider history of modernism in Europe and beyond. Tate St Ives also manages the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden, which gives a remarkable insight into one of the twentieth century’s most important British sculptors. Hepworth lived and worked in Trewyn studios, now the Hepworth Museum, from 1949 until her death in 1975, and created many of her famous works there. The lush, subtropical garden was an essential part of Hepworth’s creative process, when she died it opened to the public as a permanent setting to exhibit her works.There are short introductory tours every day, free with admission, as well as a range of events and activities for every visitor. Our Café, on the top floor of the gallery with spectacular views over St Ives, Porthmeor Beach and the Atlantic Ocean the café is open for breakfast, lunch and traditional cream teas. Menus change seasonally, ingredients are sourced locally where possible and all dishes are made fresh from scratch on the premises. Artists and the local landscape are the focus of the shop at Tate St Ives, with its wide range of books, gifts, postcards and greeting cards. Also in stock are jewellery, collectable Tate St Ives mugs, and a broad range of children’s picture books.

Tate St Ives is fully accessible.

There is a ramp into the main entrance from Porthmeor Beach. A flight of steps with a handrail. From here, there is lift access to all areas of the gallery. We have one designated parking bay in the Barnoon Car Park for visitors who are either blue badge holders, who for those who can’t access the gallery via the drop off and access slope. Please book these spaces in advance, giving 24 hours’ notice where possible.

Once you have parked, please enter via the Staff Entrance across the level terrace, approximately 10 meters from the parking spaces.

If you have booked a scooter or a wheelchair, these can also be collected from the main entrance (step free access).
