Museum where the great explorer James Cook lodged when an apprentice seaman.
The handsome 17th century house on Whitby's harbour belonged to Cook's master, the Quaker shipowner, John Walker. The rich collections celebrate Cook's life and the work of those who sailed with him. Letters in Cook's own hand, many original paintings and drawings from the Voyages, ship models and maps, and strange objects from newly discovered lands. All Europe was fascinated by the images and objects brought back. Cook became a hero of the Enlightenment and his Journals were translated into many languages
