St Margaret’s Bay is one of White Cliffs Country’s best-kept secrets.

A stunning and secluded cove that was once home to James Bond’s creator Ian Fleming, it’s here that you’ll find The Coastguard – Britain’s closest pub to France and an idea spot for breakfast (lunch, or dinner) by the beach. At low tide, explore the rockpools for fossils and enjoy the awe-inspiring White Cliffs of Dover from sea level.

Visit the Pines Garden gallery to see local artists’ impressions of nature’s connection with art, then pause for a break at the tearooms before wandering around the organically-managed gardens with an unusual variety of trees, plants and shrubs. In St Margaret’s at Cliffe, try an equestrian experience at one of the village’s two horse riding centres, or wander along to South Foreland Lighthouse – the first to carry an electric signal. You’ll find wonderful walking routes in St Margaret’s – the Frontline Britain trail takes you through the role of the village in the Second World War, while a stroll along the clifftops from the Dover Patrol Memorial will take you all the way to Kingsdown, with sea views out towards France to take your breath away. Don’t forget to charge your camera!
