Explore the East Yorkshire Coast in the off-season

Bridlington, Flamborough, Hornsea – the East Yorkshire Coast brims with charming resorts each offering bags of unique character. Aside from its seaside towns, this stretch of the coast is also rich with wildlife, coastal walks, small market towns and cycling paths making it perfect for an off-season break.

If you’re looking for a family escape in October or February half terms and want golden beaches and family-friendly attractions, head straight to Hornsea or Withernsea

Why not climb all 144 steps to the top of Withernsea’s Lighthouse for breath-taking views of the Holderness coastline? On a clear day you can see right across to the Humber Bridge.

Whether kids are in tow or you’re after a last-minute romantic getaway, Bridlington’s harbour, beaches and fresh seafood are a draw whatever the age. Lobster, crab, oyster or scallops, the shellfish at Bridlington is considered amongst the best on the coast and the town has an array of eateries from candyfloss and fish ‘n’ chips to the freshest, off-the-boat catch of the day.

Ambling through Bridlington’s Old Town you’ll encounter vintage galleries, independent shops and boutiques, perfect for jewellery, hand-crafted ceramics and local produce.  The town also offers a packed festival programme – whisky, pumpkin, kite, lobster, Race the Waves – you’re sure to stumble across a lively event and if you’re planning a Christmas break, don’t miss the magical Winter Wonderland display at nearby Sewerby Hall and Gardens.

This is also a coastline for nature-lovers, be prepared for birds, seals and maybe even dolphins and whales, if you're lucky!

Bridlington has the advantage of being close to Flamborough Head, perfect for bird watching and cliff-top walks, it boasts two lighthouses, coves and caves and is great for rock-pooling.

While just north is the seabird resting site and RSPB reserve Bempton Cliffs which offers pretty-much guaranteed sightings of gannets, kittiwakes, guillemots and, if you’re in luck, puffins. This reserve is the largest and most accessible nesting colony of gannets. For a perfect day out, pack a picnic and enjoy the incredible sea-views as seabird swoop round the cliffs.

Often dubbed Yorkshire’s Land’s End, Spurn Nature Reserve is a crooked three-mile finger of land curving between the North Sea and Humber Estuary. 

Come here for big skies and an ever-changing wildlife scene with a recently restored Lighthouse at its tip. It’s only accessible on foot or bike but across the four seasons you’ll discover a fascinating display of birds, visit in autumn to spot Woodcocks, Whinchat and warblers while in winter you’ll see Brent geese, Snow bunting and harbour seals.

Stay in a luxurious lodge, indulge in some locally caught lobster or take a yoga class with Active Coast, whenever you visit, it’s easy to switch off and clear your mind on the coast in East Yorkshire.
