Travel on the oldest and longest narrow gauge steam railway in England, enjoying breathtaking views of the Lake District National Park.

The Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway is one of the oldest and longest narrow gauge railways in England, known affectionately as La’al Ratty meaning “little railway“ in olde Cumbrian dialect. We have five heritage steam engines in operation throughout the year, the oldest of which was built in 1894!
Our heritage steam engines transport passengers from Ravenglass, the only coastal village in the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Lake District National Park, to Dalegarth for Boot some 210ft above sea level.
The journey itself was one of Alfred Wainwright's favourites; crossing through seven miles of spectacular scenery from the coastline and estuary to the foot of England’s highest mountains, the Scafell Range. There is plenty to see on your journey including lots of local wildlife so keep your eyes peeled for red squirrels, buzzards, curlews and more.
The journey takes 40 minutes each way and passes seven intermediate request stops which are perfect for walking. Our cosy covered and open top carriages provide the best of comfort and views as you travel up the line.
Dogs and bicycles are accepted on our trains for a small charge (bicycles must be pre-booked) meaning that you can head out and explore the Eskdale Valley with your four legged friend as well.
